Do you often find yourself at the campsite? Do you love fishing? Or are you short on power outlets in your garage? Then a Portable Power Station is a great addition to your gear. Xtorm's powerful Power Stations have a huge capacity and multiple output options to connect all your devices. In this blog, we’ll tell you more about how an Xtorm Portable Power Station works, how to use it, and how to maintain it!
What is a Portable Power Station?
A Portable Power Station is essentially a large, portable battery or power bank with the added feature of an AC outlet. This, combined with its high capacity, allows you to power not only mobile devices but also a variety of home appliances, no matter where you are.
What are the differences between a Portable Power Station and a Power Bank?
A Power Station has one or more AC outlets and a larger battery, allowing it to power various (heavier) devices. Unlike power banks, which are mainly used for charging mobile devices during day trips or flights, a Portable Power Station has much broader practical uses. It’s perfect for powering devices like a cooler, lamp, or laptop during camping trips or on a boat.
What outputs does a Power Station have?
A Power Station usually has several outputs. With the correct, compatible cable, almost all devices can be powered or charged. An Xtorm Power Station comes standard with the following outputs:
- One AC outlet
- A 12V car plug to charge the Power Station via your car's socket
- Two USB-C ports
- Two USB-A ports
The 600W Power Station from Xtorm even includes two AC outlets and 2x DC5521 ports.
What devices can you use via the Power Station’s AC outlet?
To answer this, you first need to know the wattage (W) of the device you want to connect. The power consumption is usually found on the product’s specification label or online. The Xtorm XP2W300, for example, has a maximum output of 300W, so the connected device must use less than 300W to function properly with this Power Station. Think of devices like lighting, portable gaming consoles, and laptops. For the Xtorm XP2W600, this limit is 600W. With this high output, you can power devices like a kettle, fan, or cooler for extended periods.
Can you control a Power Station via an app?
Our new Smart Power Stations are easy to control with the "Smart Life" app. Install the app on your smartphone and connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to have full control over your Power Station. You can monitor the battery status and charging times, manage the outputs, adjust the charge and discharge power, and set timers. This ensures you always have enough energy, even in emergencies or when you’re off the grid.
How do you turn on a Power Station and use the outlets?
To turn on the Smart Xtorm Power Station, press the power button. The LCD display will light up, and the power button will also light up. If left unused for 5 minutes, the display will automatically turn off; you can reactivate it with a quick press of the button. Press and hold the power button to turn the device off completely. The USB and 12V DC outputs are automatically enabled when the Power Station is turned on and are ready for immediate use. The AC output must be manually activated with a short press on the AC output button. If the AC output is off and there is no charge or discharge activity for 2 hours, the Power Station will automatically power down. This entire control can also be managed via the "Smart Life" app for Xtorm’s Smart Power Stations.
How long can your device be powered by the Power Station?
The duration depends on how much power the connected device uses. The Smart Life app and the intelligent display on Xtorm’s Smart Power Stations will show the remaining time until the battery is depleted, so you always know how long the power will last. Want to know in advance how long certain devices can be powered? In this blog, we explain exactly how to calculate this.
How do I charge my Portable Power Station?
There are three ways to charge Xtorm Power Stations: via a wall socket, while driving, and using solar power. The Power Station comes with the following charging cables:
- A standard charger with a plug to charge your Power Station at home.
- A charger with a 12V car socket.
If you want to charge the Power Station using solar energy, our 200W Solar Panel comes with an MC4 cable that can be connected to the Power Station.
How do I properly maintain my Portable Power Station?
- Store the Portable Power Station in a dry place at room temperature.
- Avoid temperatures below 0°C and above 40°C, as they can negatively affect the capacity and lifespan of your Power Station’s battery.
- To keep the battery in optimal condition when not in use, recharge it every 3 to 6 months.
In this blog, we’ve tried to answer all your questions about how our Portable Power Stations work, how to use them, and how to maintain them. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact our customer service via info@xtorm.eu.
